Keeping the Ladbroke area special

THE LADBROKE ASSOCIATION ART COMPETITION 2024

The Ladbroke Association is the conservation and amenity society for the Ladbroke Conservation Area (which is roughly bordered on the south by Holland Park Avenue, on the north by Westway, on the west by Clarendon Road and on the east by Portobello Road – see map.

It is a charity and one of our charitable objectives is to stimulate and promote public interest in, and care for, the beauty, history and character of the neighbourhood.

In pursuit of that objective we organised an art competition to encourage the observation, representation and appreciation of the Ladbroke Conservation Area and its history through art. The competition was for paintings and drawings and other two-dimensional works portraying some aspect of the Ladbroke Conservation Area. There were separate classes for adults and children.

The competition was open to everyone, with a top cash prize of £1,000.

There were 56 entries to the competition, sixteen from adults and the remainder from school children. Works included paintings, drawings, a collage and an etching.

All the entries were judged on 19 November by a panel consisting of the distinguished draughtsman and sculptor Nigel Hall RA, and the local architect Malcolm Pawley RIBA, who has a deep interest in art and has lived and worked in the Ladbroke area for over 30 years. All the entries were exhibited over a three-day period (from 21-23 November) in the Notting Hill Community Church.

Adults

The works submitted are in the slideshow below.

The winning entries were:

  1. View of Stanley Gardens, by Sasha Alfille, who received a prize of £1,000.
  1. Soul(s) of Grove, by Nina Watson, who received a prize of £500.
  1. Notting Hill, by Ollie Corfe, who received a prize of £250.

We thought it might be interesting to see what the public thought of the works and assked vistors to the exhibition to fill in voting slips naming their two favourite pictures. There were quite a few votes for the winning entries,  but the public favourite was the one by Sean Griffin called ‘Binman on Ladbroke Grove”, which was drawn on a computer.

The artists retain their rights in their works and any reproduction needs their permission.

Children

There were a large number of entries in particular from three local state primary schools, whose art teachers encouraged their pupils to participate: St Clement and St James CE Primary School; Colville Primary School and Thomas James CE Primary School. The judges awarded equal prizes to the six best entries. The prizes were £50 vouchers for art materials, which we hope will encourage the children to continue with their artistic endeavours. The prize-winning entries (all from the 5-11 age group) were:
